What is devotion?

Updated: Jul 22, 2024

All our scriptures tell us that devotion is very helpful to us.

The question is: what devotion cannot do; not what devotion can do?

There are no rules of do’s and don’ts for a devotee who has complete devotion for God. The rules of the Shastras are applicable only for those who think they are very learned.

When you realise that you really don’t know anything and become a child, Paramatma accepts everything. The bhakti bhava is very difficult to develop, but it is the most beautiful path. It is difficult because the ego which thinks that they are something becomes the obstacle in the path of bhakti.

The moment one thinks that they are something, the original identity is gone. What is ‘I am something’. It can be anything. ‘I am a man’, ‘I am a leader’ is the identity, it is a limitation, as all the related qualities come to you. This is the hindrance for bhakti. When you are a devotee, devotion to Guru is as a dasa. Even a dasa bhava is also difficult because saying I am a dasa has ego. Where there is absolutely no identity, that is the true place of bhakti. When the identity becomes a screen, Grace will not come.

How is it possible to practice this kind of bhakti?

Slowly, little by little, go without any identity to pray to God. Don’t go with name, fame, education, position, caste, no identity can play any role, when you are pure in bhakti, without any identity, it is a relation between you and Paramatma. There is no differentiation between men and women, poor and rich in bhakti marga. That is why many Mahatmas choose bhakti marga instead of jnaana marga, as jnaana marga needs lot of reading.

Who is a great devotee?

Kannappa Nayanar is a beautiful devotee. To call Kannappa Nayanar a Saint is only a word as he is beyond all that.

Stay tuned to read about the greatness and the glory of this devotee,

who is a hunter by profession.
